The Coolest Upcoming Cartoons for Geeks

Brace yourself. If you’re the sort of person whose stomach is easily turned by gross displays of man-childish behavior, please avert your eyes. A grown man is about to lament the end of Saturday morning cartoons.

The CW network–until now, providing the last vestige of Saturday morning cartoon goodness–has announced that it is dropping the Kids! WB franchise, which is home to The Batman and Legion of Super-Heroes, a couple of mainstays on my DVR. The CW just doesn’t think it can compete with Nickelodeon in cementing the sedentary lifestyle of American children.

By all indications, the Kids! WB cartoon properties will probably move to other formats and platforms, like online. That won’t be for me. There will be no intermingling of porn and children’s programming on my computer, thankyouverymuch. I do have a sense of decency, after all.

Rather than lament the loss of a great American pastime, I’ll focus on the positive and think about the new, upcoming (more-than-likely-non-Saturday-morning) cartoons that I’m looking forward to. It’s what Tom and Jerry would want.

The Spectacular Spider-Man

Why I’m excited:

Looks like pure fun, and the animation appears to do justice to Spidey’s high-flyin’ ways.

What gives me pause:

Enough with the dopey voice-over, already. I hope there’s not more of that to look forward to. Something about it gave me the sense that this ‘toon is not going to follow fully in the footsteps of its super-hero-cartoon contemporaries by giving the character an interesting level of depth and continuity. But we’ll see.

Also, this ‘toon is slated for release in early 2008 on Kids! WB. Let’s hope it actually makes it onto the small screen.

Transformers Animated

Why I’m excited:

Transformers, baby. Looks like the producers were loyal to distinctive elements of the original 1980s cartoon, including the theme song and the transformation sound effect.

Plus, even though I never got too excited about the original Transformers that took the form of ‘futuristic’ vehicles, these new vehicles look pretty tight. Which I measure by how cool the toys look. And they are not afraid to cross-promote the toys, as you saw if you watched the video.

What gives me pause:

Damn, I hate cartoons that make humans look all weird and disproportionate. That shit is distracting.

Wolverine and the X-Men

Why I’m excited:

Because I just don’t get tired of mutants fighting giant, frigging robots. And I feel like the last X-Men cartoon, Emmy Award-winning X-Men: Evolution had so many stories left to tell.

What gives me pause:

Um, where’s Colossus? And Professor X? And Iceman? Angel? Gambit? We better be getting some guest-appearances galore!

The Clone Wars

Why I’m excited:

Um, did you see the first Clone Wars cartoon? It was everything the prequels should have been. That is to say: “good.”

What gives me pause:

This new Clone Wars cartoon is fully computer-generated. The action sequences look pretty sweet, but the human characters could not possibly look any more wooden. Surely George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic has, by now, developed the technology for giving CG characters a range of at least, oh… three facial expressions?

WHAT? Holy space mutton, thanks for letting me know!

I still read the G4 RSS feed, but I haven’t watched the channel since The Screen Savers went off the air.

All these shows look rad! Well, except for the spiderman one. Oh, and the transformers one looks kinda iffy too. And while I’m a huge Wolverine fan, I never understood the amount of attention he received in that universe. How is he somehow more important than someone like storm, who can change the freaking weather? He has claws and a good nose.

So like I was saying, the Clone Wars show looks rad.
