Geek News Wrap-Up - Week Ending March 29
By Great White Snark | March 30, 2008
Every week, I stick my fingers into the dark and varied crevices of the internet tubes to pluck out nuggets of geeky news. This week I decided to share the highlights with you.
Should I make this a regular feature? If so, updates would appear on Saturday afternoons (give or take). I could provide more or fewer tidbits. Let me know in the comments!
MOVIES

- In response to a threatened boycott of its films, The Weinstein Company agreed to release both versions of Fanboys on separate DVDs. Still no word on a theatrical release.
- Oh, and the director they hired to do re-shoots of Fanboys is an unmitigated cock.
- The upcoming G.I. Joe movie will be an “origin film.” And how did The Baroness get that tight leather outfit?
- Robert Downey Jr. will have a cameo as Tony Stark (Iron Man’s alter ego) in this summer’s Incredible Hulk.
- Sir Ian McKellen says he’ll be back as Gandalf in The Hobbit.
- Keanu Reeves says he’s not interested in revisiting his character from Constantine. I.e.: no sequel.
- Regal Cinemas will open thirty-one digital IMAX screens in twenty major U.S. markets.
- A completely random rumor (overheard in a bar) has Hayden Christensen playing Superman in the upcoming Justice League film. This movie could only get worse if Paris Hilton gets cast as the Green Lantern.
- Tom Hanks dropped out of the production of Fareinheit 451.
- The trailer for J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek might premiere in front of the new Indiana Jones movie this summer.
- Preproduction has begun on the adaptation of Ronin from Frank Miller (300, Sin City).
- Tobey Maguire is bringing another comic book to the big screen: Afterburn. Just don’t dance, Tobey.
- Robert Englund and Jenna Jameson in the same film: Zombie Strippers gets a release date.
- One-trick pony Jerry Bruckheimer is working on an adaptation of The Lone Ranger with the writers of the crappy Pirates of the Caribbean sequels.
- More pics from Will Smith’s superhero parody Hancock are online. Yawn, dude.
- Mark Millar has confirmed an adaptation of his Kick Ass comic.
- The pointless Dragonball film wrapped shooting.

TV

- Warner Brothers has begun shooting an American adaptation of the British TV classic geek series, Spaced. Producers will not consult the original series’ creators, who include Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead). In other news: this show will suck eggs.
- Jericho exec producer Carol Barbee is doing her darndest to find a new home for the now-canceled series, whether it’s on a cable network (SciFi) or as an internet series.
- Battlestar Galactica regular Tahmoh Penikett (’Helo’) has landed a role on Joss Whedon’s upcoming series Dollhouse as The Guy Who Gets to Make Out with Eliza Dushku.
- Speaking of BSG, exec producer David Eick is writing a pilot script based on Children of Men for the Sci Fi Channel.
- Insiders are indicating that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has been unofficially greenlit to return to TV in the Fall.

VIDEO GAMES

- Wii owners, the wait is over: Rock Band is finally coming to your platform
.
- Take Two Interactive has opened the door to a Bioshock massively multiplayer online game and a feature film.
- A demo for Ninja Gaiden 2 will be available for the Xbox 360 in May.
COMIC BOOKS

- Dark Horse Comics is getting into the digital downloads game with their Predator, Aliens, and AVP titles. Call me when the price drops below $1.99 a pop.
- A judge has awarded the copyright to Superman “material” in Action Comics #1 to the heirs of Jerry Siegel, the co-creator of Superman. Cha-CHING!

BOOKS
- Stephen King and his son Joe Hill (writer of Locke & Key, one of my current favorite comics) will collaborate on a novella in an upcoming anthology honoring I Am Legend author Richard Matheson.
- Neil Gaiman (author of Stardust
and other delights) posted a free reading copy of his novel American Gods online in March. Offline weekly sales went up 300%. Meanwhile, the RIAA shakes its head in disbelief.

Hey, thanks for all the link love, bro. :-)
BTW, I don’t get all this reporting about the Lone Ranger movie this week like it’s new info when we floated both the Bruckheimer AND writer news a month ago.

Your being ahead of the curve isn’t new, Vic… give the rest of us a chance to catch up. ;) And if you’ll notice, I buried it toward the end of the movie news section.
