Geek News Roundup - Week Ending April 19

Every week, I stick my fingers into the dark and varied crevices of the internet tubes to pluck out nuggets of geeky news. Every weekend, I share the gems with you, the fortunate reader.

MOVIES

  • This Summer’s X-Files sequel gets a (lame) title: The X-Files: I Want to Believe.
  • Screen Rant reveals more details on the upcoming Star Trek film. Steven Spielberg helped talk J.J. Abrams into directing.
  • A teaser image of Scarlett from the upcoming G.I. Joe movie has been released.
  • Steven Spielberg led DreamWorks to acquire the rights to the Japanese manga Ghost in the Shell, with plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature.
  • The Justice League movie has been indefinitely tabled. Hooray!
  • Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ron Moore has signed with United Artists to create and write a sci-fi trilogy for the big screen.
  • Those Weinstein assholes are moving forward with their remake of the Kurosawa classic Seven Samurai.
  • Timothy Sexton, writer of the awesome Children of Men, is adapting the Spanish, noir-ish, time-travel thriller Timecrimes.
  • DreamWorks has tapped David DiGilio to adapt the Oni Press horror-noir graphic novel The Damned. DiGilio’s previous credit includes Eight Below. So… WTF?
  • DreamWorks has optioned Platinum Studios’ comic book miniseries Atlantis Rising for a live-action adaptation.
  • Shia LaBeouf will star in Universal’s techno thriller Dark Fields, adapted from Alan Glynn’s 2002 novel. Neil Burger (The Illusionist) will direct.
  • Ben Stiller is set to produce and possibly star in DreamWorks’ The Return of King Doug, a fantasy film based on a graphic novel that hasn’t even been released, yet(!).
  • Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) will direct Guardians of Ga’Hoole, an animated feature film based on the children’s fantasy book series.
  • Unapologetic hack Brett Ratner is in negotiations to direct the remake of The Incredible Shrinking Man, starring one-trick pony Eddie Murphy.
  • Gisele Bundchen is being considered for the female lead in the new Austin Powers film. (Stop, Mike Myers. Just… stop.)

TV/DVD

  • Fox has all-but-confirmed that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles will return in the Fall.
  • Angel alum Amy Acker joined the cast of Joss Whedon’s upcoming Dollhouse. My blogger buddy Jace at Televisionary read the pilot script, and he loves it.
  • Fan-favorite Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dodgeball) will return to TV this Fall in an ABC comedy.
  • Deal or No Deal will air a Star Wars-themed episode on April 28. Which means a bunch of hot models in Slave Leia bikinis. Woot!
  • Fox has greenlit the two-hour pilot for Virtuality, a futuristic space travel show from Battlestar Galactica producer Ron Moore.
  • Writer/producer Mitch Hurwitz has recruited three of his Arrested Development cast members (Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Henry Winkler) to voice roles in his animated Fox comedy, Sit Down, Shut Up.
  • The A&E miniseries remake of The Andromeda Strain from Ridley Scott and Tony Scott gets a trailer. Premieres May 26 and hits DVD on June 3.
  • Sam Raimi has tapped John Shiban (The X-Files, Supernatural) to executive-produce the upcoming fantasy series Wizard’s First Rule, based on Terry Goodkind’s series of books.
  • Marvel’s Black Panther character is getting an animated series on BET.
  • MGM will release the next Stargate SG-1 film, Stargate: Continuum, to DVD on July 29.
  • Executive producers of Lost offered big spoilers for the remainder of the season.
  • Yahoo! has released the high-definition trailer for this summer’s sweet-ass anime Batman - Gotham Knight.

COMIC BOOKS


Eisner nominee Y The Last Man

  • Nominees for the prestigious 2008 Eisner Awards have been announced. Winners will be revealed in July at San Diego Comic-Con.
  • Graphic novel sales in the US and Canada reached $375 million last year, an increase of 12 percent over 2006.
  • DC will publish a Gears of War comic this Fall under its Wildstorm label. Yawn.

VIDEO GAMES

  • When Grand Theft Auto IV launches April 29, it’s expected to gross a record-breaking $400 million worldwide in its first week.
  • In other GTA IV news, comedian Ricky Gervais will appear in a cameo.
  • Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe has been announced, and you can see the trailer on the new Web site.
  • Yahoo! has the trailer for the newly-announced, multi-platform game Spider-Man: Web of Shadows from Activision.
  • A new Castlevania title, Order of Ecclesia, is coming to the Nintendo DS.
  • The Sims franchise has sold over 100 million units worldwide, making it second only to Nintendo’s Mario franchise, which has sold 201 million units.
  • The Call of Duty 4 Variety Pack has been purchased over 1 million times on the Xbox 360 in nine days, making it the fastest-selling piece of content on Xbox Live Marketplace.
  • Judas Priest’s Screaming for Vengeance will be the first downloadable album for Rock Band.

      -shivers-
      Thanks for that, a new set of nightmares for me! I can just ‘tell’ it isn’t going to be good. I ‘could’ be wrong and they could make a proper adaptation to GitS, which is a bloody classic. But for now I have no faith in that… unless it is Buffy’s Faith! LOL

      Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai” was already remade as badass “The Magnificent Seven,” so WTF?!

      Mortal Kombat vs. DC looks totally badass, though it would have made more sense if it came out in 1995 (you know, when Mortal Kombat was still relevant).

      @Nima Agreed. Seven Samurai remake = huge “WTF?”

      Also, there are not many deader horses than the dead horse that is the Mortal Kombat franchise. If anything could revive it, it’d be a playable Batman.
