Geek News Roundup - Week Ending June 14, 2008

Every week, I stick my fingers into the dark and varied crevices of the internet tubes to pluck out nuggets of geeky news. Every weekend, I share with you–the fortunate reader–the top seven gems in movies, TV, comics, and video games.

MOVIES

  • Frank Darabont’s original script for Indiana Jones 4 was leaked to the internet. MTV calls it “a million times better than Crystal Skull.” Color me not shocked at all.
  • The Weinstein company will release Fanboys later this year with the original plot intact. Woot!
  • Check out the first Punisher War Zone trailer, first Death Race trailer, first domestic Babylon A.D. trailer, new Star Wars: The Clone Wars trailer, red band Wanted trailer, the first poster for Terminator 4, and the first poster for the Robocop remake.
  • Marvel revealed the logos for its upcoming movies including Iron Man II, Thor, Captain America, and Avengers.
  • Jon Favreau hasn’t been locked in to direct Iron Man II.
  • Captain America will appear in the DVD cut of The Incredible Hulk, along with an additional 70 mins of footage not included in the theatrical cut.
  • Sony and Columbia will produce a combination live-action/animated Smurfs movie. (Hear that? That’s the sound of an impending apocalypse.)

TV / DVD

  • The next season of Battlestar Galactica won’t arrive until 2009, but it’s getting an additional 11th hour added.
  • Upcoming Family Guy spinoff The Cleveland Show got a promo.
  • Fans of Jericho have started a “Save Jericho Again” campaign, featuring a new commercial. Check out the newly-released alternate ending to Season 2 if you’re feeling wistful.
  • Francis Capra (Veronica Mars) joined the cast of Heroes, William Katt (Greatest American Hero) just filmed a Heroes guest appearance, Jon Voight on 24, and Aziz Ansani (Human Giant) joined the cast of The Office spinoff.
  • Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright will launch a US tour to promote the American DVD release of the BBC series Spaced on July 22.
  • Season One of Angel will premiere on online video site Hulu on June 23.
  • There are two upcoming animated Hulk projects, including a series (Hulk: Gamma Corps) and a direct-to-DVD movie (Planet Hulk).

COMICS

  • Check out this sneak peek at Buffy: The Vampire Slayer #20, written by Jeph Loeb.
  • Chuck Dixon (Batman and the Outsiders) abruptly departed from DC Comics.
  • Creator Todd McFarlane will return to Spawn starting with issue #185.
  • D.J. Coffman is working with the band The Flobots (”Handlebars”) on a webcomic called Vote for Change, featuring stories inspired by Flobots fans.
  • DC will release the comic book prequel to JJ Abram’s new TV show Fringe on August 27.
  • Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 won the ForeWord Book of the Year Award.
  • Vincent Price will headline a new monthly comic book series from Bluewater Productions.

VIDEO GAMES

  • Research giant Gartner blames Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death issues on a faulty graphics chip designed by Microsoft.
  • Call of Duty: World at War, the fifth installment in the series, will return players to WWII with a “survival horror flavor.”
  • Crysis Warhead will be Crytek’s final PC exclusive title.
  • Check out all the new gameplay in this new Star Wars: The Force Unleashed trailer (with plot spoilers).
  • Unreal Tournament III will hit the Xbox 360 on July 7, Command & Conquer: Kane’s Wrath will drop on the Xbox 360 on June 23.
  • Check out these first images of Nightwing, Bane, and Clayface in LEGO Batman.
  • Team Xbox has a preview of the next Spider-Man game, Web of Shadows.
