Every week, I stick my fingers into the dark and varied crevices of the internet tubes to pluck out nuggets of geeky news. Every weekend, I share with you–the fortunate reader–the top seven gems in movies, TV, comics, and video games.

MOVIES

The Hobbit

  • Guillermo del Toro indicated he’ll hold contests for fans who want to appear in The Hobbit.
  • Screenwriter Carl Ellsworth has been hired to write the Red Dawn remake. Dan Bradley will direct.
  • Robert Downey Jr. will star in Guy Ritchie’s adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. Marvel has made a deal with Jon Favreau to rejoin Downey Jr. as director of Iron Man 2.
  • Check out the kick-ass first trailers for Max Payne, Quarantine, and Outlander, and the new Star Wars: The Clone Wars Webdoc, “The Clones are Coming“.
  • The Weinstein Company has restored the original plot of Fanboys and has returned the film to its original director. It’ll hit screens later this year.
  • Warner Bros. will adapt the cult comic book Elfquest.
  • The Dark Knight will open on a record number of IMAX screens.

Wolverine vs Hulk

  • Check out the trailer of Hulk vs. Wolverine from the upcoming direct-to-DVD Hulk VS. animated movie.
  • Check out spoilers for the upcoming season 3 of Heroes and the trailer for this summer’s Web episodes.
  • Showtime and Dexter exec producer Sara Colleton will adapt The Exterminators, a comic series by Vertigo/DC Comics.
  • AMC network is mining classic genre TV shows and sci-fi movies for miniseries, movies and remakes.
  • Sci-fi freshman shows are likeliest to be the upcoming TV season’s top-rated new shows, according to professional handicappers.
  • Production has begun on The Venture Bros. Season 4.
  • Courteney Cox will join the cast of Scrubs for three episodes. (Yeah, it’s a real slow news week.)

Justice League The New Frontier

  • Darwyn Cooke (DC: The New Frontier) will announce a new project at Comic-Con.
  • The Comic-Con schedules for preview night, Thursday, and Sunday have been released.
  • IDW Publishing will release its second Doctor Who miniseries starting in August.
  • Check out the sneak peek at X-Files #0.
  • Orson Scott Card talks about the comic adaptation of Ender’s Game on the latest Marvel podcast.
  • FEARnet and IDW Publishing have created a limited-edition comic book adaptation of the upcoming web series 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust.
  • Wal-Mart pulled from its shelves a popular Mexican comic book after a Houston customer complained it was racist.
