Every week, I stick my fingers into the dark and varied crevices of the internet tubes to pluck out nuggets of geeky news. Every weekend, I share with you–the fortunate reader–the top seven gems in movies, TV, comics, and video games.
Of course, the news that transcends all categories this week is that Kristen Bell had a birthday.
MOVIES

- On Friday The Dark Knight set the all-time record for opening day gross ticket sales with $66 million.
- Check out the first Watchmen
trailer, the first full The Spirit trailer, the second Twilight trailer, and the first Terminator Salvation teaser trailer. Also from Terminator Salvation, check out this bad-ass shot of Christian Bale and a pic of the new non-Arnold actor playing the T-1000.
- Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder) is in final negotiations to write Iron Man 2.
- Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream) is almost set to direct the next Robocop, which will apparently be a sequel.
- Actor Patrick Wilson discusses how faithful the Watchmen film stays to the graphic novel.
- The Weinstein Co. has officially announced Scream 4.
- Paramount has acquired the remake rights to Monster Squad. Rob Cohen (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) attached to direct.

TV / DVD

- William Petersen will leave CSI by the middle of next season, Jordana Brewster has joined the cast of Chuck
for at least three eps, and David Arquette will guest star on an ep of Pushing Daisies

- Amy Poehler is in final negotiations to star in a new comedy which was originally rumored to be a The Office spinoff, but will be a standalone show.
- Check out the animated Iron Man: Armored Adventures trailer, Heroes season 3 trailer, and the 24 made-for-TV movie trailer.
- The Xbox 360 will be able to stream movies from Netflix, and Amazon launched a limited release Amazon Video on Demand, a TV/movie streaming service.
- Universal Pictures will adapt the 1999 BBC series Second Sight, originally starring Clive Own.
- Writer J. Michael Straczynski indicated the only thing he’s interested in doing with Babylon 5 is a “big-budget feature film,” which seems unlikely.
- Justice League - The New Frontier
was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program.

COMICS

- Comic-Con is sold out.
- Publishers Weekly investigates Platinum Studios’ financial troubles.
- Neil Gaiman discusses his projects related to the 2oth anniversary of The Sandman

- Creator Alan Moore talks about his feelings on the Watchmen
movie and his other projects.
- Robert Kirkman’s Invincible will be adapted for digital media platforms like iTunes.
- The producers of the Spider-Man stage musical will hold open casting calls in New York on July 28th for singers and actors to audition for the lead roles.
- The Wall Street Journal shares details on DC’s Web-based “motion comics,” a “kind of hybrid between a printed comic and a cartoon.”

- The on-disc track list for Rock Band 2
was revealed.
- Check out Gametrailers.com for the multitude of trailers and footage to come out of E3 this week. Highlights include: Ghostbusters, Wolfenstein, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, God of War III, Red Alert 3: Rising Sun, Left 4 Dead, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Castlevania Judgment, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 Fusion.
- The E3 conference this week saw the announcement of several titles including Duke Nukem on handhelds, God of War 3 available next year, a sequel to Guitar Hero: On Tour, a release for Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360, a Marvel Ultimate Alliance sequel, and a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMO.
- Microsoft announced an upcoming new dashboard and avatar system for the Xbox 360.
- Sony announced a new 80GB PlayStation 3 model for $399, available in September.
- The Xbox group at Microsoft reported its first-ever profitable year. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Wii has overtaken the Xbox 360 as the best-selling current-gen console in the U.S.
- Electronic Arts and id Software announced a partnership, which will produce a first-person shooter called Rage.
