Giveaway: The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) DVD Special Edition!

By Great White Snark | November 25, 2008

Is it just me, or does the entire production of the upcoming The Day the Earth Stood Still remake look about as exciting and dynamic as the eyes of lead actor Keanu Reeves when he’s thinking about a chicken salad sandwich?

Why put yourself through that two hours of pain when you can totally be that guy (or gal… whatever) who’s all, “Yeah, (sniff), I’ve actually seen the original, and I don’t want some mindless Hollywood remake to sully my affection for it.  Oh?  What’s that?  You haven’t seen the original?  Well, I don’t know if you’d like it.  It’s sort of high-brow.  I mean, there’s action and sci-fi, but it’s quite the social parable and not everyone can appreciate its many layers.  (Sniff.)  But I hear Space Chimps comes out on DVD soon, so it’s not like you’ve got nothing to watch, eh?”

That’s right.  This week I’m going to help some lucky reader fulfill his or her dreams of cinematic snobbery with a giveaway of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Two-Disc Special Edition, which hits stores on December 2.

To sign up to win a copy of two-disc special edition of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) on DVD:

  1. If you haven’t already, get an e-mail subscription to Great White Snark. It won’t cost you nuthin’.
  2. Leave a comment on this post. In the “Mail (will not be published)” field, enter the same e-mail address of your subscription, so I know who you are.
  3. In the comment, name your favorite race of aliens who invaded the Earth in a movie, and indicate why they’re your favorite.

I’ll select the winners at random and announce them in an update to this post next Tuesday, December 2.

UPDATE: Oh, Dr. Nic.  Spaced Invaders?  You win the DVD, and my condescension.

One entry per person. And remember, cheaters never prosper, because I’ve got your IP address, people: duplicate entries are dopey entries. Winners outside the forty-eight contiguous U.S. states pay shipping. Because this ain’t a money tree, it’s just a plain ol’ blog.

The aliens from Liquid Sky who come for heroin, but stay for the sex.

Oh no, the Martians from Mars Attacks! is the only invasion that comes to mind

The aliens from “X-Files: Fight the Future” are my favorites, though you don’t see much of them.

But really. Who could not like the cheesy B rated showings of original sci fi flicks! Tons of ppl stand in line for this stuff!

The original of this film is one of the greatest films of all time. It is hard-hitting, thoughtful, chilling, and well-made. I am very squeamish about the new Keanu-riffic version.

Favorite race of alien invaders? I’ll go with the aliens from the new Cruise War of the Worlds. While this remake had its flaws, I felt that the true scope of the threat of the aliens was realistically portrayed.

Ooh ooh ooh! *Waves hands in air, jumps up and down* Pick me, pick me, pick me! My hubby L-O-V-E-S the original, and I can’t afford to get him a Christmas gift this year (he got laid off, we’re in debt BAD). This would be PERFECT!

      Anyway…

Favorite space aliens in a movie would have to be the ones from the Alien (all of them) series. I love how, in one of the movies (I forget which one – sorry), two of them get together and stab a third to death so their acid blood can eat through the floor and they can escape their captivity (and then come back later to kill the doctor who was torturing them).

I’ve also got to give a nod to the aliens from Mars Attacks. Horribly cheesy movie, but I have to feel for them – that music they played makes my head want to explode too.

Someone already said Mars Attacks, but I would have to agree. Those little guys were a perfect mock-up of the classic card series of which the movie was based.

Never seen the original film. A bit before my time, but the new remake looks awesome. Would love to see both of them. Please pick me.

My son really wants to see the new one, and it’s released on his birthday. So we will.

(I’m not holding my breath, but I will make him watch the original before we go, just for comparison)

My favorite invading aliens have to be from Mars Attacks! because they don’t pull any punches (everyone gets shot) and they did medical experiments on Sarah Jessica Parker. Two thumbs way up.

My second favorites would be the Vogons of HHG2TG, but the movie doesn’t really to them justice, I imagined their poetry to be much worse after reading the books.

I have to go with the aliens from Signs. Despite their extreme lack of intelligence, they scared the shit out of me.

Plus they gave me the awesome sight of Joaquin Phoenix with a tinfoil beanie on his head.

Klaatu – only because he inspired a mysterious “are they or aren’t they the Beatles?” band in the 1970s.

ooh, cool giveaway!! i’d have to say the aliens from carpenter’s ‘they live’. great movie – you gotta love those black 80′s sunglasses and the alley fight! :)

I already own a good copy of this film. I just want to put in my two cents saying that the original does rule. It’s got some great cinematography that you don’t get today with all those fancy color movies.

    14. Wavatar Bridget Says:
      November 25th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

Of course, the Martians from Mars Attacks!

      Ack ack!

They were crazy…movie always makes me laugh.

    15. Wavatar Nicholas Boyd Says:

David Bowie of course from the man who fell to earth.

Klaatu barata nikto (sp?) fellow geeksters! I would have to say that my favorite invading aliens would be the Martians from the Johnny Quest animated series. I loved the spidery, walking eyeball Martians! Although I do have to give a serious nod to the Mars Attacks Martians (love the mess they make when they explode) and the Vogons, whose putrid poetry would be positively painful to endure.

    17. Wavatar Moises Says:
      November 25th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

My favorite alien film has to be “Alien” because the aliens try to kill you and even though you kill them, they have acid instead of blood so they could still kill you even if you kill them.

My favorite aliens are the Martians from Spaced Invaders because they’re so funny.

Those Martians that Santa Claus conquered.

    20. Wavatar Syntha Says:

The aliens in V would have to be my favorite. Come on – The actor who played Freddy Kruger going around saying “Here mousey, mousey” classic.

    21. Wavatar Chantelle Says:
      November 26th, 2008 at 12:23 am

the crazy aliens from Mars Attacks will always be my favs!

    22. Wavatar V Says:
      November 26th, 2008 at 12:34 am

I got to go with that crazy alien from John Carpenter’s THE THING – way too creepy for that kind of weather, I mean if it can dominate in Antarctica – what’s to stop it.

    23. Wavatar nickolai Says:
      November 26th, 2008 at 1:02 am

Kang and Kodos from the Simpsons.

GWS, I spurn your requirement for alien invaders from a movie only. If their cycloptic, tentacled coolness isn’t good enough for you, so be it.

    24. Wavatar Dave Says:
      November 26th, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Kim Basinger, My Stepmother is an Alien. She may have successfully staved off an invasion of the Earth, but she surely invaded my heart.

    25. Wavatar jadashay Says:
      November 28th, 2008 at 12:35 pm

The Pod People from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I used to have nightmares about them when I was little. I was sure everyone I knew was gonna be snatched.

    26. Wavatar Chris Mirell Says:

The creepy, plodding plant based alien from the original 1951 production of “The Thing from Another World” is my favorite…I just finished teaching this one to my science fiction class. You have to appreciate his classy way of brutishly sucking your blood and standing for communism as an invasion waiting to happen. Still a classic!

    27. Wavatar Leann S Says:
      November 29th, 2008 at 6:06 pm

I am not sure if they were aliens but the Triffids scared the heck out of me as a kid.
