Giveaway: City of Ember DVD!
By Great White Snark | January 12, 2009
Hello, blog-machine-reading people. I’m back from my trip to CES, where I spent so much time in close contact with various electronic devices that I was able to divine the particulars of their secret language.
And your fridge wants you to know that an open box of baking soda can only soak up the odors of rotting food for just so long.
Whatever. I’m not judging you and your inherent laziness or anything, I’m just passing along the message.
And now, brace yourselves for the most awkward segue since Fox scheduled Firefly on Friday nights after that show about unshaven douchebags who drove race cars:
This week, courtesy of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, I’m giving away a brand-new copy of City of Ember, which drops on DVD next Tuesday.
To sign up to win a copy of City of Ember on DVD:
- If you haven’t already, get an e-mail subscription to Great White Snark. It won’t cost you nuthin’.
- Leave a comment on this post. In the “Mail (will not be published)” field, enter the same e-mail address of your subscription, so I know who you are.
- In the comment, name a movie whose quality dramatically outshined its lame promotional poster art.
I’ll select the winner at random and announce them in an update to this post next Tuesday, January 20.
UPDATE: Congrats, Hannah. I hope you enjoy the flick more than the cover art.
One entry per person. And remember, cheaters never prosper, because I’ve got your IP address, people: duplicate entries are dopey entries. Winners outside the forty-eight contiguous U.S. states pay shipping. Because this ain’t a money tree, it’s just a plain ol’ blog.
Netflix – Only $4.99 a month! No Late Fees. Try it for Free!

What the 20th Century F**k is “City of Ember?”
Whatever…I love free stuff, so I would submit “Contact.” The poster looks like something I could photoshop myself — never a good thing.

Funny idea. The first one to come to my mind is “Earth Girls Are Easy”. Awful posters.
But probably there are more good poster/bad film combos.

It’s a lovely movie…very pretty. I’m totally naming my kid Ember. Or Cityof. I haven’t decided yet. I’m open to suggestions.

Wait! I forgot my poster! Okay, I’d say the new Street fight movie…floating heads aside, it looks like one of those optical illusions…is it two faces or a candlestick? An old lady or a young one? People kicking each other or an ungainly orchid?

i’m saying night at the roxbury. that movie is classic. poster = boring.

I’d have to say that the posters for Australia did absolutely nothing for me. The movie was a lovely film, but the posters – specifically the one of Nicole Kidman caught in mid-run, looking quite skeletal – were horrible. They should have at least had Kidman and Jackman in the poster together.

Fun! I think the promotional posters and standees for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were too . . . stark. Just head shots of the two lead characters. Nothing there to say, “Hey, this is a great film–you gotta see it!” Nope. Just headshots and a few cryptic words. Boring.

If you liked the movie, I would highly recommend the book. It is followed by The People of Sparks, The Prophet of Yonwood and The Diamond of Darkhold.
I think The Goonies’ poster does not live up to the joy I found watching it as a child.

@nickolai: Oh, Nickolai. City of Ember is only the last Hollywood release co-starring Mr. Bill Murray.
I’d almost consider banning you from the blog if your comments weren’t so cursedly clever.

I’d have to say it’s Slumdog Millionaire, the poster wasn’t that great but the movie was INCREDIBLE!

Starship Troopers. Or The Fifth Element. Giant floating heads are not attractive, people.
Also, Running With Scissors. Who thought that one up?

Zack and Miri make a pormo. The whole stick figure thing really bothered me.

Gotta agree and say “Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” I feel like you should at least give some clue of what the movie’s about on the poster (other than Brad Pitt being hot).

The tagline on this box is “A family friendly adventure.” Jesus – that’s the best review it’s gotten. The most wonderful thing about this movie is that it’s non-offensive. I will not post an entry, as I fear I would win.

Run Fatboy Run had Simon Pegg in shortshorts on the poster. Amusing for about half a minute then kind of intimidating.

I’d agree with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – the movie had so much life and the poster was ridiculously lame.

Gone with the wind :)
Classic however cover is boring~!

In my opinion, Man of the Year”, ranks right up at the top for bad movie posters! Great giveaway prize drawing. Many thanks…..Cindi

Yay! Free stuff.

Cocoon the movie was much better than the poster.
January 15th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
Let’s see…How about “Glitter.” Didn’t see the movie, but the movie poster makes me want to twirl around the room until I hit my head off of something or until I make it through a rendition of “I feel pretty.” “Bio-Dome” is also pretty loopy, but I have to say that it is one of my favorite movies. It makes me laugh.
January 17th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
I’ll go with MST3K the Movie… because no poster could ever capture all the emotion of the end of an era :)

Hancock. It is just a face. What is with that?
January 20th, 2009 at 11:37 pm
And Hannah takes it home.
